Improvising on Guitar Lesson 31

The Cycle of Keys

In the previous lessons on improvisation we used the  I, IV, V chord progression exclusively because of its predominance in blues. In the following lessons we will use the cycle of keys which is common in jazz and swing. The cycle of keys is also known as the cycle of 5ths when playing the changes clockwise. Playing the changes counter clockwise gives us the cycle of 4ths. The cycle of keys is a tool that has many applications. I encourage you to commit it to memory.
